Russia's Federal Security Service takes down Russian Ransomware Group At Request of U.S.
This almost never happens.
RFE/RL reported today that Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) arrested members of the notorious Sodinokibi/REvil ransomware group that has caused so much mayhem for companies around the world. The U.S. State Department had offered a $10M reward for information leading to the capture of this group.
It’s very unusual for the FSB to arrest Russian hackers unless the hackers had been attacking Russian businesses or government agencies. It’s also unusual for the FSB to cooperate with requests from the U.S. government.
While the reason for the cooperation remains unclear, the video is pretty entertaining and the amount of cash seized is staggering.
